2023 For a stress-free travel and no long wait at causeway, we decided to take Shuttle Tebrau to JB. Future travels using this transport mode.

Shuttle Tebrau (ST):

Register an account with ST in order to view available slots. Requires passport input of all pax and provides the ease of not requiring to re-input the same travelling pax details on next train ticket purchased. Note:

  • Year 2024 allows pax to collect rail points for ticket purchase.
  • 2+ to 3 months advance purchase for Fri and weekend slots. Many availability slots if travelling on weekday.
  • On the spot train ticket purchase at L1. Accepts cash only in SGD. More slots available than online eg. 8pm slot available for walk-in, but online earliest is 915pm. Good for those who had missed train or an impromptu visit.
  • A friend told us to purchase one-way ticket instead of selecting “return” ticket as it is cheaper. Same fare for adult and child (Child under 4 years travel free but required to register at the counter before time of departure)
  • Use your passport to check in. The staff at the queue line doesn’t even bother with the train QR code.
  • Gate closes 20mins before departure
  • Alternative is walk to the bus terminal at the same level as where you queue for train, further in (follow the flow of people walking). Super-long q from Fri to weekends, or on public holiday.

T2T’s Wednesday night train (21:15) to JB experience:

  • Arrived 45 minutes in advance by Grab. Slow traffic at the roundabout, thus opted to dropoff and board at the nearest bus stop (W’lands Train Checkpt 46069) for our Jan 2024 trip, less than 4 mins walk over. Alternative transport by buses from Woodlands/ Kranji/ Marsiling mrt station, also alighting at the mentioned bus stop.
  • Took a lift up and a 1.5-round line of pax were queuing up. Showed our passport and staff use their device to scan. Thereafter we proceeded to immigration was smooth. 57cm luggage was not check or need to be scanned. Many empty seats during this timing.
  • Sat 12:45pm return train to SG, we voluntarily scanned our big luggage for Malaysia immigration. Although we queued before the door to enter the train platform, some pax did not. When the door opened for boarding, pax just arrived from non-queue line.
  • “Wide” gap from the step of train and platform.
  • Seats near the door (for those with big luggage) were taken up and we chanced upon back- facing-back seats and try to slot our luggage in and was able to do so. Unable to place at the tight overhead compartment or the narrow walkway, also if the boarding entrance-exit door is occupied.
  • Same smooth experience on a Sat evening Jan 2024 visit. Slightly more packed, but still with some unoccupied seating. Train departed 5 mins earlier, before 8pm departure time.

March 2024 school holiday:

Queue was longer but IMO queue was not a long wait and pretty smooth.

Note: The only accessible lift is down till May 2024, alternative is the flight of stairs.

Immigration:

  • Staff or signage around to direct you to immigration. Used e-gate at SG custom both ways, but we queued less than 5 mins queuing time when going to JB, to clear Malaysia custom. Did not use the egate at Malaysia custom and no one was using too.
  • On return to SG, T2T was forthcoming to ask Malaysia custom if need to scan our box-shaped trolley, opened and let staff looked at the inside contents (food) and was allowed to pass through without machine scanned. For SG side, those with luggage or trolley bags even when nothing to declare will need to have them scan.
  • Meat is not allowed into SG even for personal consumption, or for takeaway. Posts on confiscation by officer have been highlighted by members of the online community.

JB CITY SQUARE & Komtar

Nearest shopping mall to CIQ. Still a great shopping mall for Singaporeans to do a day trip. Most visit pharmacies for everyday essentials or medicines (Guardian, Watsons, Caring & Big Pharmacy), make spectacles or get disposable contact lenses.

Baggage locker was spotted when you enter Komtar from CIQ. Do not be misled and enter McDonald’s Komtar from signage direction, unless you are ok going down a flight of stairs.

RETAIL STORE REVIEWS:

BAKERIES & DINING

First visit for lunch at Din Tai Fung (a Taiwanese restaurant which is popular in Singapore and always spotting a long queue line).

DTFJB

Overall: Prices are lower, but Quality and Taste of food fared poorly in comparison to those in Singapore. Not worth a visit (reviewed 2020).

Oriental Kopi 华阳 @ B1. Over-rated on food quality, but affordable and good for some local food. Queue line is same when we visited on different occasion on a weekday or weekend, 10 mins wait time. By 10:30am a super longer queue formed up behind of us. Join for free membership (65your mobile#) and get an RM5 voucher to offset for your next RM30 spending. To earn points and redeem for Oriental products.

Service is prompt on any request and usually short wait for food after ordered. Recommend the Iced chum, Chicken hor fun, Nasi Lemak, Crunchy Peanut toast, Half boiled Kampung egg.

Check T2T’s FB photos with reviews here

(updated review on Mar 2024).

Takeaway cakes slices from Secret Recipe (B1). Allow customer to keep cakes ordered till return to pickup before shop closes. Recommend Chocolate banana.

Ho Seng Kee (Wanton noodle) L6

Old Town White Coffee L3:J3-25A. Located near to escalator when you come from CIQ.

Sushi King B1

Untitled3.jpg

ENTERTAINMENT:

Molly Fantasy (arcade) at L5 has been around for long. Some machines are down, and we are here for Pokemon tretta, Dragon Quest, Motorbike-racing, Drum playing, etc. Do lower your expectation when visiting here.

GROCERIES:

Supermarket, Kapitan Grocer, Basement level right across from Secret Recipe. Note to count your change if you are using cash. Although 5¢ was very small and we did not request for any return, female staff did not inform on any shortage and just kept it silently.

RETAIL:

Big Pharmacy/Caring Pharmacy/Guardian/ Watsons L2. Except for Guardian, the other stores have free membership that allows offset of accumulated points.

MR. DIY L5 @ JBCC / L2 @ Komtar (Caring Pharmacy side): Had difficulty locating the outlet at Komtar as it is not located at the main retail area and is beside Caring Pharmacy at the “empty” area and need to walk further in (Location). Usually no crowd and the area is big to house various home improvement, DIY, parties, stationeries and many other products. Check product range on the same FB photo post (reviewed on Mar 2024).

Padini Lot MF-01. Some texture of the clothing are very smooth and soft. Affordable pricing suitable for all in the family. The outlet at Southkey Midvalley has shoe section.

Other retail stores to consider:

Old Chang Kee (Bite size food) L3:Lot J3-18A

Sanook Kitchen B1:Lot MB-11 to 14

Yong Sheng Gift Shop, selling sweets and confectioneries from Malaysia

Focus Point L3:Lot M3-02

F.O.S (Factory outlet clothing) L3

OOPPA (Optical) L4:Lot M4-13 & 14

Popular (Bookstore) L4. Here for the stationery, young scientists (may not have the latest edition but do have the latest bundle volumes) or comic.

Kskin (Korean express facial) L4:Lot M4-03 15mins S$28 for 4 treatment choices OR 30 mins S$50 for 2 treatments.

Uniqlo L3. Prices almost similar to SG.

  • The Mid Valley Southkey (19 mins drive) – latest Jan 2024 visit.
    • Crowded on weekends, S’poreans’ 1 of SG’s fave mall.

KSL CITY MALL

Nearest is 25 mins drive from Woodlands checkpoint.

Below reviews are based on a combination of revisits.

Had visited KSL City a few years back with recent refurbishment and some new shops around the mall. Visit to toilet is chargeable at RM0.20, no toilet paper available.

CHILD PLAY:

Untitled.jpg

An area right in front of Sushi King (LG-49) with a few motorised cars and motorcycles (Rm6 for 10 minutes and longest for 20 minutes), sand art and other diy craft (Big picture RM9). Around here, you can connect to TM free wifi.

20170210_184710.jpg

GO n Play Playground (LG-20). RM24 for 2 hours (30mins RM 6,
60mins RM 12, 1hr & 30mins RM 18) with no extra charges after 2 hours and free entry for parents. Playground has been there since a few years back.

Like: Cheap. Free entry for parents.

3 levels of play that can occupied children for a pretty good amount of time. The playground is suitable for 5 years and older, although you still see some toddlers playing with the pool of plastic balls located near the slide, climbing up the padded stairs meant for those taking down the slides. Parents can wait at a long table with chairs and watch a movie. Supervision is required if you have young children.

Drinks are available for purchase, while the toilet is located outside the playground within a short walking distance.

WELLNESS

Imperial Reflexology 御足轩 (Level LG- Unit 17) Permanently closed or changed of biz name

Like: Cheap massage. Comfortable seat and environment. Free WiFi

But: Will prefer a less chatty masseur.

Had a 60 mins foot massage for RM48 and had requested for a male masseur.

Right inside, the environment portrays a classy feel and is cozy with sufficiently-spaced sofa seats. While doing massage, two TV  are placed above in front of us with movie played. Right in front of the foot massage seating are massage beds.

The male masseur was a tad chatty, but the massage was firm and able to target the acupoints.

Overall, cheap and worth a revisit. Same pricing with QS Reflexology, but seats are plushier here, and establishment is newer. Did a combi package of 60mins foot and 30mins shoulder at RM85 in Jun 2017. If you require a switch of masseau the difference is RM3.

DINING

PicsArt_02-10-08.31.46[1].jpg

Causeway Bay Hong Kong cafe JB (LG-39) Permanently closed info as of Dec 2023. Both beef and fish hor fun (RM12.80 each) arrived with Zi-char aka stir-fry smell, thus without trying we thought finally we found a great Zi-char place. Unfortunately, both hor fun did not taste good, with the beef having a hinge of sourish taste. The fish ball soup noodle (RM11.30) was unexpectedly pepperish.

Overall a filling meal, but not great tasting and not worth a revisit.

Brunch at Killiney Kopitiam (Permanently closed info as of Dec 2023). Free WiFi and they were having a Buy 2 Free 1 on all main courses except western fare, and child meal priced at RM6.90 with free soda drink. Cheap and good for the chicken curry with toast and kid’s chicken nugget set. (Visited 9 Jun 2017)

Kinsahi Japanese Restaurant – KSL outlet closed with other outlets here

Dinner was at Tea Garden. KSL outlet closed with other outlets

PicsArt_02-18-06.53.40[1].jpg

On a Saturday, there was no queue. Service was prompt and each table has a call button. Local dishes are served.

No service charge. An affordable meal (Eg. Cantonese style hor fun RM10.80, Curry chicken with roti prata 2pcs RM12.20, Jasmine hot green tea teapot RM11.80), not too bad.

Like: Cheap with no service charge. Local food. Prompt service.

BAKERY

PicsArt_02-18-06.58.26[1].jpg

We have takeaway from Moonlight Cake House (Bakery) at LG-43.

Gorgeous fondant cakes with a wide assortment which you can view them online.

The 6″ fresh durian cream cake was creamy, identical to the real fruit and not too sweet. The 9 pieces of different flavour macaron (Big size) at RM30.80 was cheap, not overly sweet and ‘big’size.

The bakery also sells breads, swiss rolls, cookies and pralines.

Like: Cheap macaron.

GROCERY /PHARMACIES

Lotus’s hypermarket.

3 brands of pharmacies namely Watsons, Guardian pharmacy and Caring Pharmacy can be found. Overall prices are cheaper than in SG, BUT out of the 3 brands, Caring and Guardian are very close to being on par in prices while Watsons is pricer.

SUTERA MALL

34 mins drive from Woodlands/ Tuas checkpoint.

Untitled.jpg

Sutera mall is spread out horizontally and consists of old and new sections. Our first visit after it was recommended.

The outside facade of the mall looks old. We parked at the south gate of an open-air carpark and walked through a nearby sheltered walkway (right next to where you enter from the carpark gantry) to the mall, as crossing the road with heavy traffic was a gamble and no traffic light was insight.

The first sight that greeted us were a couple of restaurants and we went further ahead into the mall by the West entrance to level 2. Outside of the mall’s entrance was Chinese New Year (CNY) decorations, an area with live chicks for viewing and inside was a small bazaar selling CNY goodies. We walked around looking for a place to dine for lunch, and explored by taking the lift to level 3, the new section. Note that the mall directory and customer service desk is not located nearby thus it is suggested you check out the floor plan before visiting. Aeon Big (supermarket) is located on level 2 and 3 on the East side.

The new section is not fully occupied and we located our usual Japanese restaurant, Sushi King, to dine for lunch. Service here was prompt, including when we requested for some items.

After lunch, we walked around the mall and window shop at a toy store, How House Games, selling some popular anime/ cartoon figurines (consist of official and unofficial products), keychain, etc. Prices may not be cheaper than Singapore. On the same level are 2 stores selling CNY decorations.

Purchased some local and imported tidbits from Tao Yuan, located on Level 1 081/082 (old section). Walk further up and exit the door there is a play area for children to ride on motorised cars and motorcycles. The 20 minutes ride was a hassle as the children had to switch between the vehicles quite often as I think the staff did not fully charge the batteries. Beside it is a dated playground which the kids did not go as we decided to leave.

Near the mall exit, there is Baskin Robbins (Single scoop of Junior cup is RM8).

Verbena, a crowded bakery shop prod us into buying some slices of cakes for takeaway. Doesn’t crowd usually indicate the food are nice? Apparently nicely displayed cakes, but the Matcha (RM7.50), Durian mousse (RM7.50), Tiramisu (RM7.80) and Oreo Cheese (RM7.20) slice cakes failed to impress. Very average cakes and we could not really taste the different flavours. We were eating as we had already paid for it. What was the hype from this bakery? Perhaps bread?  Similarly for the BlackBall dessert shop (黑丸), the amount of the Signature dessert (RM8.90) is lesser although the size of the takeaway bowl is the same.

We did not visit the supermarket or any of the clothing shop. Overall a disappointment and we will not be returning (2017 visit).

*More dining, leisure (eg. indoor Go-Karting @ RUD Karting) and entertainment options are now available when checked in Dec 2023, vs KSL.

Holiday Inn JB Dec 2023 v2

Review:

T2T’s general feeling is the guy staff are generally friendlier and offer better service than lady staff, such as holding the lift door for us to enter, prompt in acknowledging us when we wanted our luggage stored. Our assigned rooms were all on the 16 floor, probably will request for a higher floor in advance.

Mar 2024 trip review

Had to personally cleaned the glass tables at the lobby area for us to place our items and there are only power plugs at the Lobby Lounge, with some limited range of beverages, muffins and cakes from Starbucks. Price is steeper for e.g. Mocha Tall RM10.91, Classic hot chocolate RM12.73, & Muffin RM10.90 (less 20% for IHG member).

Booked via Expedia for our Jan 2024 trip to offset some credits, and sent a request for connecting rooms to the hotel via app . Arrived past 8pm and 2 counters at the front desk were occupied (one was the same lady who checked us in for Dec 2023 trip) and T2T was the only one in queue. 2 guys from Concierge desk came over and served us. Putera, the guy staff did the check-in, enquired if it was first stay with the hotel and warmly welcomed our return when informed it was not our first stay. This warm gesture definitely shifted up our previous unimpressed service of the lady staff.

Room 1610 and 1611 was next to the lift landing. Rooms and bathroom are way cleaner, including the pillowcases and bedsheets. Connecting room only comes with 1 room with King-sized mattress and the other room with 2 single beds.

Dec 2023 review

Overall standard is below its 4-star graded hotel during our Dec stay in Room 1603 & 1604. The hotel is nearest to CIQ and many Singaporeans will opt for stay here with a minimum of 1 night stay, hotel seems to get complacent in their quality, as outlined below.

Check in after 10pm and approached a lady staff at the counter. Partner did the check-in and only passport of the person who booked the room is required. We were allocated to Room 1603 and 1604. Went up and found the rooms are not connecting rooms and not as informed that the rooms are beside each other. MummyJ went down and enquired with the same lady if a room right opposite or beside is available, and whom did not comprehend that rooms are separated by a wall. After emphasizing the room was not beside twice (staff mentioned albeit in an unfriendly tone that she had mentioned to partner), and then did she    mentioned that the hotel is fully occupied for the night.

  • + Nearest and connected to CIQ. Able to travel on escalator to reach hotel.
  • + Room is spacious for 2 person in a room on a king-sized bed, and should be able to accommodate a couple with a young child in 1 room.
  • + Daily replenishment of bottled water, 2 or 4 in a room.
  • 3 modes of shower head with 1 mode of somewhat strong water pressure (no brand handshower).
  • WiFi modem is placed on the ceiling outside the bathroom passageway. Room 1603 has a few times of few seconds on-off disruption affecting TV viewing or on our electronic devices.
  • Fridge temperature is not cold for all rooms stayed in Jan, Mar and Dec.
  • Unimpressed with the hygiene and presentation of Room 1603 (see clearer photos in FB). Torn and visible stains on the duvet and pillowcases, stain coffee-table, office chair was shaky (same for Room 1617), mold in bathroom wall and gaps.
  • Need to change lift to go to the mall or room. G1 (Ground floor to Komtar/ cross over to City Square) > G8 to room

Exit level 1 from Amari is Toast box (open 8am-3am) and right beside 7-eleven is opened 24 hours.

Hotel: Amari Johor Bahru

Park at level 3 as it gets you directly to the lift to the hotel lobby at level 6. Parking is payable at RM10 for unlimited entry and exit. You will need to get your parking ticket validated at the concierge and again insert your validated ticket into the ticket machine located before the exit.

Revisited for a night in Deluxe room. Slow response from Housekeeping or no answer from Front Desk.

PicsArt_11-22-01.08.37
Superior Twin (Nov 2018)

17 Nov 2018: A “last minute” decision, price was still affordable as we were booking more than 3 days in advance. Directly booked with the hotel for 2 adult 2 young children on a superior twin room (2 single beds). The room was spacious, and mostly clean except for the one strand of hair found on one of the shelves of the TV cabinet. Basic essentials such as shampoo, shower gel, toothbrush set were given.

The air quality was better than last visit. The aircon was pretty cold even after we adjusted, it auto drops back to a lower temperature. After a call with the operator, whom picked up the phone within 5 minutes, we had the technician coming in to adjust the temperature to a comfortable degree.

We had booked for 3 person but only two towels were given. The deliveries of the requested items were done within 10 minutes after requested.

Unfortunately, firm pillows requested were not available. The toilet paper was a tad rough, although the facial tissue made up for its softer texture.

  • Check in/ Check out

Quick check in on a Wed at 2+pm

Latest check out time was made available to us at 12pm. A day before our checkout, a letter was left on the desk in our room informing us that the wait will be long on a Saturday at 12pm and we could settle our bill a day before or via express check-out.

On the day of our checkout, there was no check-out signage at the reception and we had to check with a guest who was in the queue before us if we were in the right queue (we were on the far left of the queue with only one staff attending to check-out guests).

Meanwhile with a few people ahead of us before it was our turn, we enquired with the concierge if we were able to do an express check-out since we had made a deposit during check-in with a credit card. We were told if we had additional charges such as carpark, etc, then we could not do an express check-out.

The queue time was reasonable and by our turn, Sharon, apologised for the long wait and was smiling when greeting us. The check-out was a simple printing out of an invoice showing room charges+gst+service charge+carpark (we did not have any miscellaneous charge). Since this was a simple calculation and self explanatory invoice, why was an express check-out not possible when credit card details have been left in the booking?

DaddyC wanted to purchase the cookies and after Sharon enquired it was for personal consumption, out of goodwill she gave us complimentary 5 warm cookies. In the end, we still bought an additional can of cookies (9pcs in a can) home.

  • Room
    • High floors for Hhonours members (free membership) on Level 23-25.
    • Our requests made during reservation have been prepared upon check-in and we were informed by the staff.
    • Each family member was given a complimentary cookie which was warm with some macadamia nuts filling, crunchy and great tasting!
    • Spacious room with two double beds.
    • 4 choices of pillows.
    • Strong water pressure from the rain shower.
  • Service standards improvements for the Housekeeping team

Clear away…Clear away..Clear away…Stop. More thoughts please when housekeeping.

1. Birthday celebration in room- simple balloons and a complimentary small cupcake was provided, which was arranged prior to our arrival. The next day on returning in the evening to our room, the balloons were spotted missing by the children even though we did not indicate any clearance, nor is this the norm for hotel when doing housekeeping.

2. Empty plastic bags left on the writing desk were also cleared when logically if left beside the dustbin then it would mean the need to remove from the room.

3. We requested for morning newspaper which was complimentary and was duely delivered to us. Newspaper still in the bag left untouched on the table was cleared away before we read or wanted to read in the evening. After informing the Careline over the phone, the newspapers were re-delivered, but newspapers given were already read through (base on the haphazard arrangement of newspaper placed). We were expecting clean newspapers and the staff finding the newspapers to re-deliver should informed us the newspaper was read.

4. Two small face towels were placed at the wash sink on the 1st day, subsequent day 1 piece and third day there was none.

5. A request for a half-filled ice bucket was delivered on a Friday night arrived with the cover marked with sticky chocolate stain.

Overall, the hotel would have earned a 3-star rating out of 5 stars, if not for the better service earned from the staff at reception during check-out.

Will I return for a stay at this hotel?

Likely to return given per night is approx S$131 per night and more diligence on our part and notify not to clear any item in the room, except those in the trash bin. T2T will also give other nearby hotels a try.
